Partial — No. 1: Percussion
The anatomy of the isolated instrument
In acoustics, a partial is a single frequency within a more complex tone, one element of an instrument’s hidden fingerprint. Partial takes this principle as a way of listening: isolating one instrument or family of instruments at a time. It begins from a simple bias, a fondness for the particular. Removed from the ensemble, the instrument is heard not as accompaniment or support, but as a complete sonic body with its own structure, pressure, texture, and range.
The inaugural performance centers on percussion and the physical logic of rhythm. Here, drums are treated not as a backdrop or timekeeping device, but as primary voices: melodic, textural, and spatial. Moving through jazz and avant-garde, it features Swiss drummer Christian Bucher in a solo set before opening into a collaboration with Bergan Nuñez on bass, where two rhythmic sensibilities meet.
